Making progress
Towards 100% coverage
In the port of Rotterdam, more than 95% of incoming containers are now securely and reliably released and collected without a PIN code via the Secure Chain. The ultimate aim is 100% coverage. Initiatives to this end are currently underway in the deepsea, shortsea and ferry sectors. Other Dutch ports are also considering adopting the same secure and reliable approach. Read more about the current status below.

Deepsea sector largely connected
Virtually all deepsea shipping lines and ship agents whose vessels call at Rotterdam no longer issue PIN codes when releasing incoming container cargo under their responsibility. These containers can now only be collected from deepsea terminals via the Secure Chain.
Making shortsea more secure as well
Participation by the shortsea sector is the next important step towards a uniform, secure and reliable process for releasing and collecting import containers in Rotterdam – without the use of PIN codes or booking references. A growing number of shortsea shipping lines and ship agents are now taking concrete steps towards this.
Preparing for further expansion
To achieve 100% coverage for the secure release and collection of import containers via the Secure Chain, a number of shipping lines/ship agents and terminals in the port of Rotterdam still need to take action. This applies to the shortsea, deepsea and ferry sectors alike. Consultations and concrete actions to this end are currently underway. Want to know more about what you need to do to participate as a shipping line/ship agent or terminal?
